Young Wizards

08:50 am - CrossingsCon: the Young Wizards convention
I know this community is pretty much abandoned, but just in case, I thought I'd pop in and post about this before it's too late.

CrossingsCon 2016 is a fan-run Young Wizards convention happening June 24-26 in Newark, New Jersey. The first two days of the con are panels and such at the hotel. June 26 is an optional tour of YW-related places in Manhattan.

Badges cost $50 dollars. The badges with the tour are available until May 22; the ones without are available until June 15.

There is a hotel block with room discounts available.

I am not a member of the concom (I'm just a very excited attendee), so please direct any questions to the concom either via their Tumblr Ask box or their email thecrossingscon@gmail.com.

02:35 pm - John Carter Movie
So, is anyone planning on seeing/has anyone seen the new movie based on the Edgar Rice Burroughs Mars books?

Much like Kit's doodles, Dejah Thoris will be actually wearing clothing. Though at the actress's request, the clothing will be a bit briefer than the original design.

My son has already expressed an interest in it, so we'll be going to see it together. Looks like during the day on Monday or Tuesday will be a good time to see it.

09:56 pm - Anyone been paying attention to solar weather recently?

I thought some folks around here might think this was interesting/cool/relevant!  The sun just spit out apparently a pretty huge CME, which it also did... recently, about a month ago I think?  I was all excited because the little tool on my Google homepage said "STORM!" instead of "normal" with regards to solar activity.

You just remember to behave yourself within reason, Sol, and we'll all be happy!

Off the top of anyone's head, do we get a description of Nita any earlier than that scene in Wizards at War where she's looking in the mirror at a pimple?

I'm trying to do a series of first-appearance quotes for the YW fan tumblr I run, and I can get a bunch of good ones for other people - Kit and Dairine both get several good ones in the first three books, I'm having trouble picking one each - but man, I can't get hold of anything for Nita. (While I'm at it: which is your favourite Lone Power? I am super-partial to Alone!LP in his suit, scarf, and big black sword.)

04:59 pm - Dairine's Planet
Does Dairine's planet, the home of Gigo, Logo, etc., have a name? I'm having no luck finding it anywhere, if it does.

If it doesn't have a name, what do the fans generally call it?

Can anyone remember in which book Tom or Carl says something along the lines of, "After all, most people think it's normal to have a nameless sorrow at the bottom of your heart"? I feel like it's Dilemma but I don't see it on a flickthrough.

12:39 pm - Words as a Source of Power in So You Want to Be a Wizard
I've known for a while that I'm largely the kind of reader (and student of literature) that I am because of writers like Diane Duane who showed me how magical plain old words can be. But explaining this to other people has always been a bit difficult...especially when those "other people" are the kinds of people who work in university English departments and Take Literature Seriously. I've always been frustrated by these people, for a number of reasons, but I am a grad student in English lit and I should be able to give them an argument on "their" terms about why books like So You Want to Be a Wizard are not just awesome, but integral to literature as a whole.

So, with a lot of this in mind, I ended up writing something like an informal analytical essay (but also like a celebration) about the power of words in So You Want to Be a Wizard, which you can find on my blog if you're interested. I've been piecing this together in my spare time for a while now, and I'd love to hear any thoughts that you might have on it.

07:23 am - Binding Oath --help?
Binding Oath, the
One of the most powerful strictures in the Speech, the Binding Oath is the basis for almost all promissory statements and wizardly vows; even the Wizard's Oath is derived from it. It is phrased in the Enactive recension of the Speech, and the Binding Oath has so much power inherent in it that any being which swears it -- even the Lone Power itself -- is required to abide by the Oath's terms on pain of the withdrawal of all energy which has been invested in the being by the One.
The Oath begins, "I swear by the One to perform what I promise, fully and without any reservation, nor with any mechanism or execution founded in the intention to deceive; to fully inform the wizards to whom I swear this oath of all manner and matter of things pertaining to their querying and desire; to carry out this information at a speed and in a way best suited to these wizards' desires and the achievement of their ends; and at the end of said achievement, to depart without doing any harm to them or any thing or person affiliated to them in whatever degree, and when the conditions of this swearing are discharged and acknowledged to have been discharged, to go peaceably again into my own place. And all this, by the Power of that One in Which all oaths and all intentions rest, inviting It on my abbroachment of this Oath to withdraw the gifts It allows me to enjoy, I swear -- " There are several more optional phrases setting out any additional conditions and requirements, the fulfillment of which will signal the oath's completion and the release of the being doing the swearing.
A wizard will only be able to use the Binding Oath once in a lifetime. In WH, Nita judges that the right moment has come, and forces Esemeli to take the Binding Oath...with mixed results that serve only to emphasize how dangerous the Lone One is to deal with even when the wizard thinks he or she holds all the cards. Additionally, the Oath is as binding on the administering wizard as it is on the being who takes it. So powerful a stricture routinely demands a high price; the power of the binding (determined by the power of the being which is bound) implies a directly proportional payment in energy by the wizard. Such payments can take years to clear. (WH)
(See also: Adjurations, formal.)
Category: Theory of wizardry

That's what the WikiErranty has to say about it.  But are you as confused as I am?  I'm trying to change the Oath Nita says in the beginning of my story into a version of the Binding Oath. But am I correct in dong so?  Diane Duane mentions using it in "Wizard's Holiday."  But I don't remember it.  I'd like to not have to reread it if at all possible...

So a little help?

PS.  Is it possible to go through the Oath one sentence at a time?  I don't understand all of it.

Double PS.  If this isn't allowed, Mods feel free to delete.

11:26 pm - The Rewrites!
DD posted about the New Millenium Editions that she's self-pubbing as ebooks. Go and read the post, but the bullet points are:
  • DD gets a lot of feedback from readers, which is reflected in sales, that the early four books are confusing, alienating, boring, or weird in their technology. "Readers" here means new readers, young readers, readers in the actual target market who are sort of essential.

  • She wants to fix those pesky timeline issues.

  • She wants to fix what she describes as "quality of writing issues", clunky bits, etc
  • .
  • If she does it herself and releases them now, she'll have solid new versions to give to the publishers if they ever do a reprint (possibly when #10 happens).

So?! What do we think? Shall we have a bitter old fan bitchfest?

07:57 am - I really hope no one minds...
Moderators, please feel free to delete this but...

Does anyone know where I can find a hardback copy of Deep Wizardry?  (Not library-bound but hardback... hardback has a jacket, library-bound is just a book in hard form)

I swear I've looked all over the place!  I've tried Barnes and Noble, Amazon, and Rare Books!

It's the only one missing in my collection.  If you have any suggestions I'd greatly appreciate it.

Oh, and it has to be under $40.  I'm afraid I'm on a limited budget as most out-of-schoolers tend to be.

Thanks so much!

EDIT:  I also have a very very rare hardback copy (but not what I'm looking for) so if anyone is looking for collecting really really old (but in great shape) Diane Duane hardback, I have one!

04:32 pm - Hello! Intro post coming up!
I've been lurking here for a long time and finally decided to make a LiveJournal and talk to some fellow Young Wizards fans. I have a sort of interesting story with how I met the Young Wizards series, so here it is: I've been reading the Young Wizards series since 2009. I was recommended this series in sixth grade when I took a reading quiz. When I told my friends that later on, they described it as "fate" or "destiny" for me to read the Young Wizards series. I picked up the first book the summer after sixth grade and instantly loved the book. But for some strange reason (that I still can't figure out today) I abandoned the first book. (Don't hate me! I was only eleven.) So I went into seventh grade and found the book (and the rest of the series) in the library, so on 9/11/09 (I figured out later on), I picked up the first book for the second time and read it. But this time, I kept on reading. :-)

So that was my story of how I met the Young Wizards series. I hope I didn't bore all of you with my story.

Was I supposed to tag this entry? As you can tell, I'm new to LiveJournal and here.

Thanks for reading and I'm hoping I revived this community a little too.

12:40 pm - Looking for a quote
I unfortunately only have the first three books with me at the moment, and I'm looking for a quote in which someone -- I think Tom or Carl? -- says of the Powers, "They change bodies and genders the way we change clothing." Or something like that. I initially thought it might have been at the end of High Wizardrdy when the One's Champion reveals that it's been hiding inside Peach all this time, but a cursory examination of that chapter has not yielded any results. If anyone remembers where the exact quote is, and wouldn't mind typing it out for me, I would be forever in your debt!

The reason I'm looking for the quote is that I've been thinking recently about the way in which transgender or genderqueer characters are treated (or might be treated) in science fiction and fantasy universes, and I feel like the Young Wizards universe is set up in a way that (perhaps uniquely in what I've read) emphasizes the essence of selfhood/personhood as distinct from gender labels. At first this spawned fic ideas, but now I'm contemplating a more bloggish response to the topic, and I'd love this quote as an example to non-YW readers to support any claims I might make about the YW-verse.

11:45 pm - The Oath
I was just curious how many out there had memorized The Oath. I took it myself when I read So You Want to be a Wizard, and decided it was a pretty good thing to keep in mind when living life from day to day. Well anyways a week or so ago I took the time to commit it to memory and was wondering if anyone else had as well.

10:52 pm - Silly question
So this is a really silly question, but stopping to ask it lets me procrastinate on my wrisomifu obligations, so obviously I just can't resist. Is there canonical information on how Nita takes her coffee? If not, how do you think she (and everyone else) likes it?

We know that Harry and Carl both like it strong, and Tom likes it a bit more refined. That's the only canonical stuff I can think of (and I think they all like it black? Maybe Tom takes milk?) I feel like Nita probably takes milk (wait, Ameripick question: should I be saying creamer instead of milk?). Dairine likes it black because she likes to be, you know, tuff. Anyone else?

11:11 am - Signes Copies of AWoM up for auction
Hey Young Wizard fans! Diane Duane has just put up five signed and personalized copies of A Wizard of Mars for the foresthouseeyes fan auction. This is an auction to help LJ user foresthouse , who is undergoing experimental eye surgery, which her insurance doesn't cover, and she has been told that she must pay her $4000 bill by the end of the month. (Read about it: here, or at cleolinda 's journal).

As there are no signed copies of A Wizard of Mars floating around (due to the problems with that volcano), these will probably be some of the only signed copies of AWoM available, so if you really want a signed copy, this is definitely a chance to pounce on it! Plus it is for a good cause.

Hello all!

I am a giant nerd and made a list of all the Speech words that have been used in this series from Books 1-9 (I think I got all of them) which I will now share with you. Keep in mind that I only compiled a list of words in the Speech; I left out things like the Mason's Word whose true pronunciation is never mentioned.

Please correct a definition if I've got it wrong! Especially hwanthaet, I was at a complete loss how to define it.

Hello, all you lovelies. I just had a thought, and this seemed to be the place for it.

In SYWTBAW, when Nita is reading the Manual, there is special mention that "No one should take the Wizards' Oath who is not committed to making wizardry a lifelong pursuit. The energy invested in a beginning wizard is too precious to be thrown away. Yet there are no penalties for withdrawal from the Art, apart from the knowledge that the Universe will die a little faster because of energy lost…"

Somehow, something I hadn't fully realized before struck me: it's not getting the Manual that makes someone a wizard, it's taking the Oath. The candidate is given a choice, and if they do not take the Oath there is no loss. Now, obviously, most people would go for it, but what about those who don't?

I suspect that there are two possibilities. Either, like former wizards, they gradually forget what they know, or - more interestingly - they are in a unique position to know about and help wizards in more mundane ways. People like Millman, perhaps, although he could have a situation more like Carmela's.

Do any of you have thoughts on this matter?

11:52 pm - Anyone up for playing a game? :D
So I'm reading AWOM finally! And it's totally rekindling my Dairine!muse, who's been quiet the past year or so.

So um -- this is a call out for anyone who'd like to write with my bratty teen/preteen wizard. In either a canon or a totally AU setting. (Though I've sort of been itching to try writing her at about 18 or 19.)

Any takers?

EDIT: I guess, if I had a choice, I'd be specifically looking for a Darryl, a Nita, or a Roshaun...or a Lone Power for her to mess with. Though I certainly won't turn you down if you have someone else in mind, or even an OC. I'm more a fan of past-tense, third-person prose RP than dressing-rooms or sixwordstories. Plot-wise, my games with Dairine usually end up taking us on epic errantry to other galaxies, because Dair is just more fun when she's doing things.

01:01 pm - Contrast and Comparison
I've pretty much got Harry Potter on the brain 24/7, and then lately, I've been going through a few of the YW books in preparation for getting A Wizard of Mars this Friday for my birthday. *bounces* Both fandoms got jumbled in my head and I kept seeing similarities and the interesting differences in the ways the two authors handled different concepts and themes, and eventually, I had to put it all down in a word doc to exorcise it from my brain, lol, so I could function instead of endlessly pondering YW vs HP. Because fun as it is, so distracting!

I don't pretend to be objective in any way, this post is pretty much how I think Diane Duane rocks in so many ways that JKR fails to measure up to, and all the things I love about YW and how it's also dealt with in HP. My HP f-listers disagree with pretty much everything I wrote, lol, I'm curious to see if you guys would agree.

If you're interested in a discussion, take a look here at my journal.

Hey all, long time no post! I've been meaning to do these icons for months...pretty much since I knew AWoM would be coming out sooner rather than later.

Anyway, onward!Collapse )

For some reason I got really invested in the idea of Alia Shawkat playing Nita in my YW brain-movie...dunno if she'll be a universally popular choice, though :P.

Images of Alia from Google Images and The Balboa Observer-Picayune. Other "casting" includes Tyson Houseman (yeah whatever I know he's in Twilight but SRSLY, there is a real lack of young Native American/Hispanic actors out there, okay) as Kit and Courtney Halverson as Dairine. These images are all culled from Google. The image from #9 is from Getty.

Okay, so I know that a Tom/Carl fanmix exists, and I'm pretty sure that I found it through either this comm or myriadwords, but it's late at night and I don't really want to sift through every single comm entry to find it. I remember very little about it except that it is the reason why I love the song "Come On Get Higher" by Matt Nathanson, and also may have included "Bulletproof Weeks" and something by Placebo. If anyone could point me in the direction of this, that would be lovely!

I have finished my very first readthrough of A Wizard of Mars, and my immediate thoughts regarding it have been added to my journal. That is mostly a lot of flailing and incoherence, however, so unless you are interested in my ramblings on, rather unimportant.

What is likely MUCH more relevant to your interests are the screencaps that I did using Google Earth's Mars feature. I know I didn't hit up every place Kit, Nita and associates went to on the red planet, but I definitely capped the important ones.

So, for a virtual aerial picspam tour of Mars, click below.

06:35 pm - Some theorizing on the Manual and the Speech

There's been an idea running around my head for a couple of weeks now that's given me some questions about how the Manual works in forms other than the book/technology forms that we mostly see it in the books. AWAB mentions how some wizards get the manual as a subconscious "knowledge" type thing, and have to memorize parts of it, but how do the wizards with oral Manuals start off?

Second, I know that the Speech registers as one's native language when spoken, but does this happen when the Speech is written? I think this may have been mentioned in Wizard's Holiday, but I can't remember.

And last thing: How exactly did wizardry work in premodern times with the smaller amount of scientific knowledge than we have today? I'm curious how much the Manual grows, if at all, with human knowledge. It may be that people in previous times just had a lot more to learn in basics from the Manual, but I have no idea, really.

Any thoughts on this stuff? Kind of theoretical, but I figured this was the best place to ask. :)

12:42 pm - is this really fanwork? hrmm

This was, in its original incarnation, conceived as a fanmix for the Young Wizards series, specifically focusing on this lovely description to the book (thus the title). As often happens to me when working on YW fanworks, I found that it applied to a much broader subject, and it slowly branched out to something that both encompasses and surpasses the YW universe. Still, as it was, at one point, supposed to be a fanwork, I figured I may as well give it to you all. Think of it as a Valentines day present, one day late.

03:02 pm - Fangirling in Ireland?
So I'm finally making it to Ireland in the end of February, and am as unbelievably excited as you might imagine. A Wizard Abroad might not be my favorite YW book but it's Diane Duane and therefore ten times better than most other written material. I was wondering if any other YW fans have visited Ireland and seen any of the locations in the book. I'm not going to be there very long (three nights in Dublin, two nights in Galway) but while in Dublin I was hoping to take some kind of day-trip out toward County Wicklow, and I figured this might be a good place for suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Dear youngwizards: all my books are in storage, & I would be so grateful if someone could help me out by providing me with a quote I need from one of them... I think it's High Wizardry. Nita's dad says something like "Now, I know you love doing that wizardry stuff, we all want to be wizards!" & Nita thinks something like "if you wanted to be a wizard, you would be one, because the world really needs us." If anyone knows what quote I'm talking about, & wouldn't mind providing me with it, I'd be ever so grateful!

04:12 pm - could this qualify as a fan essay?
This was going to include Rirhath (and by virtue the greater galactic society?) and Demisiv, but considering Wellakh probably wins the prize for being the most complicated planet in the YW universe (at least, that we have sufficient information about. I’m sure that there are many other, much more complicated planets, which we know nothing about.), I left it at this. Maybe I’ll explore greater galactic society more at a later date (like, after AWoM, which could completely contradict me, I have not read it yet).

Because thinking about social structures and institutions and how it all works together is one of those things that I think is interesting (aka, I’m planning to take sociology as my college minor), I thought that I might try a little thought experiment, and take the data that we do have to extrapolate on how other things on Wellakh might work, at least on a very basic, speculative level. I’ve broken it down into the five basic sociological institutions (as given to me by my sociology textbook, though this does not mean that there aren’t other subcategories or even that Wellakh might have more important social institutions by nature of it being an alien planet), but I took out the two that I had the least information about (Religion/Belief Systems and Education), because this post is a monster as is, and would be unmanageable in any other case.

Warning: Teal Deer AheadCollapse )

So, what do you guys think? Am I a nutter on all counts? What do you think about Wellakh’s social structure, and how it might play out in greater galactic politics and society. What about the two that I left out (religion/belief systems and education)? (I would be totally stoked to discuss these things too, and in fact have saved what I originally wrote on the topics.) I don’t know, this is just stuff that I think about (way too much for my own good), so feel free to engage on one or all of these topics.

What is the awesomest thing to do to your fandom?

Why, cross it over with Jane Austen, of course!

So that is what I have done. Because Dairine and Roshaun are Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy inarnate. Plus, this one comes with pictures!

(It is a truth universally acknowledged that a wizard not on errantry must be in want of a date)

(Tell me if I should take this any further than it has already been taken)

I was given mod permission to pimp a comm called comment_fic. I've been leaving some Young Wizard Series prompts and thought it'd be nice having more of us over there.

02:35 am - Random Musings re: WaW, "Casting," and Crossover Possibilities
I wonder what happened to the Alaalids during WaW. Like, did Druvah have a similar problem to the one that Tom experienced?

I hope that was unspoilery enough.

My brain tends to cast books without my active participation. I don't say, "I wonder who'd play . . .," I just sort of realize one day that whoever it is is the person I've been seeing in the role. I just realized today that Larisa Oleynik, circa 1994, is quite possibly who I've been seeing as Dairine.

And I've long known that Molly Hagan is who I see as the One's Champion (even when the One's Champion's supposed to be male). I'm working on a manip to that effect.

And I've been pondering the logistics of crossing over YW with Rick Riordan's Camp Half Blood series. I doubt you could make them the same timeline, since the cosmology is so radically different between the two, but with the Long Island thing and the blue food thing (plus certain similarities between certain fight scenes).

Maybe CHB is in a timeline where the Powers only ever had one identity on Earth? Like the Champion only ever was Athena. What the heck happened with the CHB Earth's Choice, though . . . .

04:39 pm - Stealing the Elf-King's Roses
I just read this book for the first time after owning it for a couple of years, and as I'm in the habit of writing up my thoughts about books I read, I've posted some musings on my tumblr account. Figured I'd share and see if anyone else has something interesting to say about this book -- I don't hear much about it, but I really enjoyed it!
